Phonetic Note Of The Day

Today, Dee (the manager) used the word 'mithering' (as brought to my attention by greengolux). The same sense - loosely, 'to bother at' - so it turns out it really isn't made up; but the pronunciation wasn't what I expected at all. In my head, it had a short 'i', as in 'mitchell'. Turns out, it's 'my', as in 'miser'.

So there you go.

I'm amazed you'd never heard of 'mithering' - it's one I've known and used all my life, so I guess it must be a Manchester/Lancashire/Cheshire thing.

I thought about making a comment about pronunciation, but couldn't be bothered :) I figured all you Southerners would work it out if you ever did hear it.

Interesting to note how proximate it seems to be in pronounciation and meaning to 'dithering' though. ;-)
