Today, Dee (the manager) used the word 'mithering' (as brought to my attention by [livejournal.com profile] greengolux). The same sense - loosely, 'to bother at' - so it turns out it really isn't made up; but the pronunciation wasn't what I expected at all. In my head, it had a short 'i', as in 'mitchell'. Turns out, it's 'my', as in 'miser'.

So there you go.

I'm amazed you'd never heard of 'mithering' - it's one I've known and used all my life, so I guess it must be a Manchester/Lancashire/Cheshire thing.

I thought about making a comment about pronunciation, but couldn't be bothered :) I figured all you Southerners would work it out if you ever did hear it.

Hmm, an entirely new word to me...

Interesting to note how proximate it seems to be in pronounciation and meaning to 'dithering' though. ;-)

Ditto to that. Either that or you're just too posh to use the word "mithering". :p
