Yes. I believe the young folk do say, "Squee!" in cases like this. And so do I.

Am no longer young and hip

Clearly demonstrating that being young and hip has nothing to do with youth. I, of course, have never been young and hip, and don't expect ever to achieve that state of grace.

My resident advisor on all things young and hip is both amused and surprised by your lack of hipness. If he got a LJ of his own he could tell you this.

Hey, look, it's The Fifth Element! Or wait, is it live-action Cowboy Bebop?

I don't know what else it could be because nowhere in the trailer does it say "Firefly". Since they somehow found the money to make a movie, why are they being so paranoid with the marketing?

They apparently think Serenity has higher brand recognition. Or is cooler. Or something.

And I have no idea where you're getting The Fifth Element from.

Plus there isn't a Firefly fan in existence who doesn't know what this movie is. Although the movie is cetainly aimed at making Firefly fans go Squee1, its main goal is to make people who've never heard of Firefly go Squee.

And I have no idea where you're getting The Fifth Element from.

Me either. At no point did Lee Evans do a pratfall, nor did any ludicrous piece of masturbatory design-work overwhelm everything else.

I think I just realised what Whedon might have meant about spoilers, though; if you haven't seen the TV show, this gives away a few things, doesn't it?

After he made Buffy and Angel, Joss Whedon came up with a TV show called Firefly. It explicitly transplants some of the features of a post-civil-war Western into outer space (people speak like cowboys, certainly), except that the captain of the ship (A Firefly-class ship called Serenity) was on the losing side. It lasted about nine episodes on US TV before being cancelled (a lot of people are quite bitter about this, not least because the network thought they knew better than the series creator which order to show the episodes in); a DVD box set was subsequently released with all thirteen or so episodes on it.

It's very good. It's good science fiction by tv drama standards (particularly the last episode made, 'Objects in Space'), and it's very good drama by tv science fiction standards. :) The central concept is not as punchy or as original as Buffy, but I think the cast is better and that he had a better idea of how to write an ensemble show by this point. The film in theory follows on from the series, although from the look of the trailer it's going to be self-contained and explain everything you might need to know.
