So an hour ago, I got woken up by the phone ringing. Someone calling for my Mum, who was out at the time. I took a message, then decided it wasn't worth going back to bed and had breakfast.

Half an hour later, my Mum gets back and returns the call. From the conversation I can hear, it's obvious money is involved. She hangs up, and says to me, "we're buying a new house. In Somerset." The call was to say my parents' bid had been accepted.

Not selling this one, you understand; just buying an additional one for her and my Dad. It's a test, to see if they like the area, with a view to moving out there when my Dad retires. Now, I knew that we'd inherited a non-trivial amount of money from my grandparents, but I didn't know it was a house-sized amount, even if it is only a small modern house. So that was the first thing.

Then, as I'm getting ready to have my shower, the phone rings again. I let Mum answer it, figuring it'll be more house-related business but no, this time it's for me. It's Hammicks. "Hello," says the man, "we'd like to offer you a job. Can you start next tuesday?" Given that the adverts were for jobs in the newly expanded and refitted shop, which isn't due to be ready until the start of November, this leaves me a little nonplussed. I accepted, though, obviously, so I suddenly find myself with exactly one week of freedom. Erk.
