So an hour ago, I got woken up by the phone ringing. Someone calling for my Mum, who was out at the time. I took a message, then decided it wasn't worth going back to bed and had breakfast.
Half an hour later, my Mum gets back and returns the call. From the conversation I can hear, it's obvious money is involved. She hangs up, and says to me, "we're buying a new house. In Somerset." The call was to say my parents' bid had been accepted.
Not selling this one, you understand; just buying an additional one for her and my Dad. It's a test, to see if they like the area, with a view to moving out there when my Dad retires. Now, I knew that we'd inherited a non-trivial amount of money from my grandparents, but I didn't know it was a house-sized amount, even if it is only a small modern house. So that was the first thing.
Then, as I'm getting ready to have my shower, the phone rings again. I let Mum answer it, figuring it'll be more house-related business but no, this time it's for me. It's Hammicks. "Hello," says the man, "we'd like to offer you a job. Can you start next tuesday?" Given that the adverts were for jobs in the newly expanded and refitted shop, which isn't due to be ready until the start of November, this leaves me a little nonplussed. I accepted, though, obviously, so I suddenly find myself with exactly one week of freedom. Erk.

Date: 2002-09-02 06:34 am (UTC)Oh, and congratulations on the job. Why so non-plussed?

Date: 2002-09-02 01:18 pm (UTC)Just because I'd been lead to believe that the jobs weren't actually going to exist until the new expanded shop opened at the start of november (give or take a couple of weeks for stocking shelves and things). Next tuesday is a bit sooner than I was expecting!

Date: 2002-09-02 07:05 am (UTC)they must have lots of very high shelves :p
scary knowing that you've only got a limited amount of time for bumming about though. plus new jobs are always scary for a bit.
but it'll all be good.

Date: 2002-09-02 01:20 pm (UTC)And I've got a moral dilemma, too. I'm supposed to go to the jobcentre to sign on on wednesday; I could in theory claim money for the couple of weeks between making the appointment and now, and then immediately sign off. Would that be very wrong of me, d'you think...?

Date: 2002-09-02 03:32 pm (UTC)However, if you haven't had your initial interview yet, I'd probably not bother. Getting JSA is hard (well, it was for me); this is good because it prevents scroungers, but a royal pain the arse if you have a legitimate claim. I might be biased though, my claim was complicated by them not believing the end date of my course.

Date: 2002-09-02 08:55 am (UTC)SO yeah. Well done on the job. James Thin's phoned me up and told me I didn't get the job. WHich is clearly a good thing as both you and I working in bookshops would lead to now-scary similarities, what with the 'rents house and FF thing.

Date: 2002-09-02 11:22 am (UTC)Is it just a shop assistant job, or is it some form of higher-up thing? Hope it goes well anyway.
