The winners are here. Neil Gaiman won best novel for American Gods, which gives me one more reason to get around to reading it.

The winners for novella - Vernor Vinge's 'Fast Times At Fairmont High' - and novellette - Ted Chiang's 'Hell Is The Absence Of God' - were both published in short story collections, rather in magazines, so I haven't read them. I was mildly annoyed about this, but then I discovered that most of the shortlist is available online. Some of them can be downloaded for free as ebooks, although you have to register. This is a damn fine idea, and I now know what I'll be doing this afternoon...

How many Hugos does that make for Dave Langford and Ansible?

It's reminded me I really should get round to going registering at the library, and maybe reading some Vernor Vinge. Well, that's tomorrow's entertainment sorted.

I think everyone's lost count. :)

reading some Vernor Vinge.

A Fire Upon The Deep! And True Names for (I think) the first mention of the Singularity.

Damn straight! And a well deserved win that was, too. But I am holding you responsible for me going off to read lotsa novellas online now. You do realize that, Mr. Scapegoat Person...right?

Oh, and OMWF got 4th place for 'best dramatic presentation', although, according to some who attended, it got the second largest cheer after LotR (the, duh, winner). Buffy fans, eh?

The really interesting thing is that as of next year, 'best dramatic presentation' is going to be split into 'long form' (ie TV) and 'short form' (ie films) categories.

See here, for example.

Can't help thinking this is a good thing, too - TV and film are as different as short story and novel.

Time runs differently in my universe, you understand.

Well series run for, like, 16 hours a season right?

They do, but episodes get nominated. Besides, read the link: under 90 minutes = short, over 90 minutes = long.

I've driven Niall insane, really.

Nice. If it worked for me.

I'll stick with Project Gutenberg.
