Every time a developer puts up a new housing development in the village, my mum goes to look around the show houses to see what they're like.

My sister and her husband do this too - going round showhomes with a hyped-up toddler and criticising their decor and picking at the fixtures until they break is an excellent way to spend a rainy afternoon.

I remember doing that on the carboard box estate out back of my parents' place when they built it a decade or so ago. It's amazing how *small* modern houses are.
