My answer to the last question is ZERO!

Zero should have been asked in this poll?

Second to last question. :P

Oh ye of little faith.

Actually, what concerns me is that Dan apparently does have faith in me.

I like to bet on the winning horse is all ...

Yes, because your TBR pile is so eensy that you are going to slot in some books that aren't science fiction.

I'm 105 pages into the first book already. How d'you like them apples?
From: [identity profile] secritcrush.livejournal.com
Ask me when you've actually finished.

I've read some of the Heroes comics, but not all of them.

I think there is a powerful persuasive force you haven't allowed for, ie Nic's going to make him read them.
From: [identity profile] secritcrush.livejournal.com
Well I did consider it, but I didn't think the invitation to the awards ceremony was for two, so I figured she would use her mind control powers influence to make him read them.

out damn typos!

I want to read them! Well, ok, I want to read three of them. But still.

I liked Shakespeare Code all the way through UNTIL they got to the whole end stuff (i.e. back in The Globe). Then it was silly.

And I'm not watching Heroes but hit your no by mistake, you could've had another option in there for not watching and reworded your question!

I also wanted "Zero" for your penultimate question. Take heed Syd.

Do I have faith in you to attempt to exorcise your male guilt by reading a shortlist of books you wouldn't otherwise read and which includes one book by a new writer which didn't make it onto the Orange Prize's own best new writer shortlist? Youse betcha, buddy!

Don't be too moved, now.

The Inheritance of Loss, because it won the Booker; A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers, because Ursula Le Guin gave it a glowing review and she steered me right with Hav; and Half a Yellow Sun, because it sounds interesting and I can't quite believe it's as good as everyone says it is. (I may also try to read Sarah Waters' The Night Watch, because I've had a copy lying around for about nine months now.)

I owned the Desai and had the Guo on my wishlist before the shortlist was even announced, so that's only four books I wouldn't otherwise read. :-p (And isn't that, you know, one of the points of awards?)

No, to direct people to books they wouldn't otherwise read. :-p

mmmm not really. They exist to celebrate excellence.

for some values of excellence. I am still bitter about Vernon God Little

So they direct people to excellent books, in theory.

Not having seen the Daleks or Lazarus eps, I didn't respond to those. The rest are as you see.

(I'm not particularly in a mood to argue except in a silly manner, but I feel the need to say that if you say something is a "point" of an award, then I think it implies that's part of the judging criteria - otherwise it is a side effect.

Further, I think as far as pimping works goes? Save a handful most awards are utter failures at this, so saying it is a point is saying it is a point that they don't execute.

If you want to rebut, I'll be back tomorrow to counter argue.)
