It's convinced me to go seek out this book. :-)

Incidentally, I was appalled that Ted Chiang was unavailable at Borders...I guess he's not commercial enough yet.

What, my ringing endorsement wasn't good enough?

I think Roberts does a good job of articulating why the book is good, as well as it's weaker areas. Definitely worth reading, though. And it's a travesty it wasn't on the Clarke shortlist, dammit!
