And now, something completely trivial. Thieved from [livejournal.com profile] tafka and [livejournal.com profile] brassyn, etc, etc.

Well, I have now requested a proof copy. Whether it'll turn up before I leave, I don't know. I also got rather excited to see that there's a publication date of april for Neal Stephenson's next, so maybe I'll try to chase that up as well...

Catharsis good, just don't do anything rash. :-)

1. A book

Well, you've already read & enjoyed 'Practical Demonkeeping' so I'll suggest instead:

'Monkey vs. Robot' by James Kochalka

Mmm...now that's a challenge given what you've already read, but ... Christopher Moore (you've not read 'Bloodsucking Fiends' yet!)

3. A song

http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/bebop_askdna/01.ram

"What Planet Is This"

4. A movie

5. An artist/band

Yoko Kanno, if you couldn't guess it!

6. A CD

No. It's rubbish. :-p

Chasing Amy

Seen it, it's great - joint favourite Kevin Smith film with Dogma. Yes, I've seen all his films.

1. A book: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. I'm reading it at the moment and will shortly be able to lend, if you're interested.

2. An author: I'm sure I've said this before, but Jasper Fforde. He doesn't do the kind of stuff you're used to, exactly, but then his stuff isn't like anything anyone is used to.

3. A song: White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, as heard on the soundtrack to The Game

4. A movie: Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, if you've not already seen it.

5. An artist/band: I think our tastes in music are sufficiently different for none of my recommendations to be of interest to you. I'm sure you already know about the stuff I listen to that you might like .

6. A CD: The Morvern Callar soundtrack is pretty good.

7. A website: I find http://www.empireonline.co.uk useful for film-related info.

Movie Afterthoughts

From: [identity profile] greengolux.livejournal.com
(Damnit, I can never think of one film without thinking of three.)

Two other films you really should see are:

After Life - a Japanese film in which the recently deceased are given a week to choose one memory to be recreated on film, which will then be the one and only memory they will be laft with for all eternity.

Last Night - a Canadian film covering the final few hours before the world ends. It's about what people choose to do with their last hours, and how their choices of how they spend their end time are affected by other people.

Both films are beautifully made, slow, and moving, and both lead to the interesting and thought-provoking "What would you choose?" question. I have them both on tape if you'd like to borrow them; they're quite hard to get hold of otherwise.

Fascinating! I'll have to look for them here.

Fun too to see the US/Canada split. From big budget 'Armageddon' to the much smaller 'The Day After' (hey, that film is so esoteric that IMDB doesn't even have it!), the stated American assumption is that 'we'll fight now matter what' to prevent the outcome, or failing that, will survive to rebuild (TDA). Astonishing optimism really.

Flowers For Algernon

Yes, I've had my eye on that for a couple of weeks now. It's an intelligence-amplification story, isn't it? It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up against Ted Chiang's 'Understand', or Vinge's 'Bookworm, Run!'...

Invitiation to match quotation wits on my LJ!

1) Incidentally, I think 'Clerks' is by far Kevin Smith's best film.

2) 'Flowers for Algernon' is very very cool, I remember reading that as an assignment in grade school ... closet ALF propaganda handbook? Maybe, maybe.

If this is the same book that I'm thinking of, I do not recommend the Disney animated film version of the book called, 'Rats of NIMH.' Disney just can't help throwing a 'it's magic!' curve ball in what is otherwise a great story.

IIRC The film The Scret of NIMH is based on the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which I absolutely loved as a child and haven't read for ages. Oh, and it's Don Bluth, not Disney. :)
