Eraserhead

On thursday, Naomi handed me a copy of Eraserhead. "I think you should watch this," she said. "I want to know what you think of it." And who am I to argue with a pretty lady?

I was initially bemused by the fact that the box gave no hint as to the content of the film. Nothing about the characters, or the plot, just a series of enthusiastic quotes from various media sources about just how powerful and original this seminal work of surreal horror is. About thirty seconds after the film started, I remembered that, what with it being written, produced and directed by David Lynch, character and plot are somewhat beside the point. Having watched the whole thing, I'm forced to admit that there really isn't anything useful you could write on the back of the box; describing what happens would only spoil it for someone who hasn't seen it. Suffice it to say that if you've seen anything else by David Lynch, you'll probably have a fair idea of what to expect.

All in all, I'm glad I've seen it. I wouldn't necessarily say that I enjoyed it all, and I'm not sure that I'll ever feel the need to watch it again, but I think it definitely does me good to watch something like this every so often. It's like descaler for my brain.

Indeed - they are the downfall of every plan and scheme I'm involved within.

So how are you going to report back to her?

Ahh, just like watching "Provider" then. Well, except the "glad I've seen it" and the "enjoyed it" (any of it).

The last sentance, however, does remind me of just where you did your degree :P

By complimenting her on her taste, obviously. ;-)

What am I missing, here?

Just that you feel the need to remove the grime from your brain through mindless, dodgy viewing - you're far too sophisticated, Oxford-boy :P

Ah, I wasn't clear. Eraserhead isn't mindless, or dodgy. Bizarre, surreal, disconcerting, and flat-out freaky, yes. But clearly not mindless. :-)

Have you had a look at http://www.davidlynch.com ? It's mostly pay-per-view, but non payees can visit his online shop which sells Eraserhead hats, T-shirts and posters.

And I thought it was a film too weird to be merchandised!

I'm intrigued by the 'six short films by David Lynch' DVD...

Hehehe

NOTHING is beyond merchandising in America.
