"How old are you?" asked the new Naomi.

"22," said I.

"Oh," said she. "So you're not, like, 26, 27 then?"

I'm not sure whether to be flattered or vaguely worried.

It's obviously because you're more mature and sophisticated than the average 22-year-old. Yeah, that's, um, it.

Temporal distortions caused by the citical mass of thought formed when you're asked 'What is SF?' have made you age faster.

...and yet, look at what he came up with.

'....you bitch'.

Classic. I wonder if he realises that statement now comes with a tag....

Didn't you know?

Yeah, all OUSFGi undergo a trip to Jupiter whereupon they either devolve to everlasting youth or spring forward to a decrepit stage eating supper in an echo chamber room ...

Oh, nevermind. :-)

Moreover, your concept of 'withered old bag' is going to change substantively when you start hitting 24, 25, 26. :-)

Withered old bag is 40, trust me.

(and more punctiliously)

We now live in an era where we can realistically expect a goodly number of us to live to 100 ... thinking of 28 as in any way 'old' or even 'mature' is becoming outmoded.

That's quite a jump. I have found that the way your hair is cut, the make-up you wear, and the clothes you wear, can have an impact on how old you look to other people. I've found that. I even saw a makeover programme where two women looked much younger than they were, they got a makeover and it added years to them (in a good way).

Go for 21. It's nice and inbetweeny. Not too babyfaced, not too withered old hag.

You offended people when you were *born*?

Wait. In retrospect, that's obvious.

I was an early talker. I never said whenabouts 1979.

"Wait. In retrospect, that's obvious."

People tend to judge me at roughly my age, or younger. Very rarely older. It's happenned more than once that my sister (2 years my junior) has been pegged as the older one of us, and it's not because she looks 'old', at a youthful and fresh 20.

the crucial info you've missed telling us is,

How old is the new Naomi? Older or younger? Or 22, just like you? Whichever it is, I think you can safely say that it's a compliment when someone is disappointed that you're not the age they thought you were.

Apart from anything else, it means they've given your existence more than a moment's thought.

Just what I was thinking too...
From: [identity profile] malenfant.livejournal.com
She's 20, nearly 21. But she is at university, so I'd have thought she'd have a vague idea of what mid-twenties looks like. She tried to cover it by saying I looked 'mature' and 'sophisticated'.

So yeah, it means she's given my existence more than a moment's thought. Sadly, wrong Naomi.
