Have bought some actual books: Look At The Evidence by John Clute and Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys. Both of these can be blamed on Graham.

Magazines panel was good. Well, I got most of what *I* wanted out of it, anyway. I think maybe I should have realised that the audience was going to be 80% writers and adjusted my plan slightly. Met [livejournal.com profile] apotropaism and her brother at the end of it, which was good. Went on to a slipstream panel that was a bit unsatisfactory.

Then went for dinner with [livejournal.com profile] sdn, [livejournal.com profile] nhw, Andrew (M. Butler) and Elizabeth Wein. After that was the Anonymous Claire party, which was awesome, though I fear the pictures and videos that may soon appear online. Dan, remind me to tell you the story about Virginia Woolf and Olaf Stapledon.

Then it was down to the bar to chat to Chance and Gwenda and others for a while. All in all, a good day. Except that I have lost my programme for the second time. What's with that?

Oh, there's a perfectly rational explanation. Elves.

I have a photo of you with a sausage-baloon around your neck, but it's appallingly poor quality.

I want to see the hoopla video on a screen near me sometime Real Soon Now(tm)

According to Stan Robinson, Stapledon sent Woolf the manuscript of Starmaker, and she loved it, thought it was great literature. A few years later she sent him one of her manuscripts in return, saying that this was her attempt to portray human comprehension of deep time and what did he think?

I thought that was nifty. Zac was the one transcribing the panel, so hopefully he has more exact quotes of what was said.

That is extremely cool: also, bears out my theory that specfic was really quite respectable within Britlit circles at that period.

Our other dinner companion was Elizabeth Wein. I hadn't even heard of, let alone read, any of her books but will keep an eye out from now on.

I can recommend Clute's other books of criticism. You might have some difficulty finding Strokes, but Beccon has only recently published Scores.
