Pretty painting with sand (18MB, .wmv, via withboots)

Matt Cheney chairs a symposium on speculative poetry at Strange Horizons. What is it? Does it matter? Why? etc. With Alan DeNiro, Theodora Goss, Mike Allen. Favourite poem linked to: 'Family Tree' by GO Clark.

Frank Black talks to Ray Bradbury. Yes, that Frank Black.

Survey claims that young people are "more grown up and responsible than their counterparts were 10 years ago". Uhhuh.

A PVP I find funny! Penny Arcade still going strong.

Discussion of the changing definition of slipstream infernokrusher fiction at David Moles' place. Also The Sparrow, for some reason.

Hot teen Shakespeare! One of Bookslut's columnists snarks about updatings of classic stories.

Around LJ: [livejournal.com profile] butterfly writes about male writers writing female characters (friendslist opinion sought: should I be trying to watch this House show?); [livejournal.com profile] die_fleiderhat gives us the LJ of the last Dalek; and [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 has come up with some Friends-esque Firefly credits.

Clarke Award tonight. Hopefully see plenty of you there. Watch [livejournal.com profile] instant_fanzine for awards results updates.

I'm the only person who see Frank Black and thinks Millennium, aren't I? Chris Carter, I hate you.

Clarke Award tonight. Hopefully see plenty of you there.

I expect instant text message announcement of the result, you know. You're allowed to send it to i_f first.

I suspect [livejournal.com profile] instant_fanzine will be racing EmCit for the news again, yes. :)

If River of Gods wins, you'll probably be able to hear the squee from Mars.

You mean Lance Henriksen?

One of Bookslut's columnists snarks about updatings of classic stories.

I'm not sure what she's snarking about, exactly. The phenomenon of an adaptation? Plagiarism of plots? The fact that the films are aimed at a 'teen' audience? The first two, it should be noted, Shakespeare did quite shamelessly. The last one... well, he aimed some crap attempts at comedy at his then-current audience, too.

Why didn't Shakespeare write stuff set in the eleventh century, with people talking like it was the eleventh century? Oh, wait, maybe that's because setting your fiction in a time period half a millenium before your audience were born has always been a crap form of popular entertainment.

I very rarely understand the motivations for snark, and it's not usually the most internally consistent form of criticism. But it is usually quite fun to read. :p

When I'm leader of the world, snark and slash will be first up against the wall.

... and this is why you will *never* be world leader.

*sigh*

I suspected it might have been something to do with that.

If it's any consolation, you should feel free to talk about "slash up against a wall" as much as you like.

Oh, it can piss me off no end as well, don't get me wrong. But there's a time and a place, you know?

There's never a time or a place for slash, of course. :p

I just hope you and Tim can refrain from slapping each other long enough to appreciate the irony of the pair of you complaining about slash :-p

Also she seems a bit out of touch if she thinks it all started with Clueless. Hasn't anybody told her about West Side Story, or Forbidden Planet? I suppose it's just as well she hasn't seen the advert with the following dialogue:

BOY (speaking of the neighbourhood bullies):
I see their knavery: this is to make an ass of me;
to fright me, if they could. But I will not stir
from this place, do what they can: I will walk up
and down here, and I will sing, that they shall hear
I am not afraid.
GIRL (speaking of the boy):
I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again:
Mine ear is much enamour'd of thy note;
So is mine eye enthralled to thy shape;
And thy fair virtue's force perforce doth move me
On the first view to say, to swear, I love thee.
The lines are Bottom's and Titania's from A Midsummer Night's Dream (with some lines between left out). The advert is for baggy jeans.

Doors 6.30, presentation 7.45. Dinner hopefully not too long afterwards.

Is this one of those sekrit invite-only affairs, or can anyone just show up? The fact that dinner is included suggests an invitation is required. Bugger.

From: [identity profile] coalescent.livejournal.com
Invite-only, I'm afraid, although the awards administrator might be reading this ... the dinner is not part of the award plan, it is entirely my own plan based on the prediction that I will be hungry.

Thanks for the Firefly credit link, just the reward I needed to make up for hours spent constructing Clarke Award name badges (sticking labels, punching holes, cutting and tying ribbons - it's such a glamourous life I lead).

Admiring of the badges is compulsory for all attendees, btw.

Haven't read the linked item yet; but I'm loving House. I did mention it briefly a week or so ago (oh, yes, here). There's a few formulaic bits that seem to be cropping up each week, but watching House being as misanthropic as humaly possible is a joy.

If they had put that in the blurbs for the show there would have been a chance I'd of watched it.
