In case anyone going to Eastercon this weekend didn't know, most of the stories nominated for the short fiction award are available online. So, no excuse for not casting an informed vote, then.
'Point of No Return' by Jon Courtenay Grimwood
'Delhi' by Vandana Singh
'The Wolfman of Alcatraz' by Howard Waldrop
'The Faery Handbag' by Kelly Link is available in The Faery Reel; and the fifth story, Stephen Baxter's 'Mayflower II', is not online, but I've written about it here (and if you ask nicely I can lend you my copy. Actually, for some of you if you don't ask nicely I might forcibly lend you my copy).

I am a real Howard Waldrop fangrrl, ever since I read "My Rose and My Glove" in (I think) Omni. Delighted to see he's in the running.

Yup. I liked that wolfman story a lot. Going to read the others now.

I haven't read much Waldrop (a grand total of two stories, I think), and I have to say Wolfman didn't blow me away. It's fine, good even, but just ... I don't know. Didn't give me the kick that some of the other stories there did.

I love Waldrop's work with a passion. I really do. I've published a book by him, and I own and have read everything, even the embarassing stuff. And even for me, "Wolfman" was just ok. I was surprised to see it on the ballot. Can't wait for what he does next though. Oh, and you're in the UK, right? Go find a good secondhand bookshop and see if they can get you STRANGE THINGS IN CLOSE UP. It's the only book I ever kept spare copies of to give to visitors.

I am. I'll scour the dealer's room at Eastercon this weekend. But what if it's a choice between that and Black Juice?!

(I'll have to get 'em both, I guess...)

Well, I'll try and read them, but I've a heck of a lot to do this week so I might not succeed. We shall see.

I read them all in a couple of hours, they're mostly not that long at all. Of course they're all modern, so you probably won't like any of them anyway :p

Excellent. You knew I finished the last short story on my phone on the weekend, didn't you? :-)

Alas at my current rate, it takes me several months to get through 4 stories, so it'll be too late for me to offer comment on them, but hey...

I've managed to get through Delhi already. Except for the bit about the city at the end, I really liked it. Interresting idea, well developed, certainly keeps you hooked. I thought the bit right at the end was fine, and it could've done just fine without the bit almost at the end about the city.

I think I basically agree with that.

'The Faery Handbag' should be back online now. Sadly 'Mayflower II' (the eventual winner) still isn't.
