"Please could you contact me to discuss a good time for you to come in for
a second interview."

Suggestions as to how I'm going to get there on a postcard, please...

(And what's with this 'second interview' business, anyway?)

They've culled some of the herd, and now want to see who is the best of the best. Smaller numbers, easier to compare with each other. That, or they just love interviwing people for the hell of it. You've made it through to the next round, well done and good luck.

Wot she said.

Basically it means they liked what they saw, they're impressed by you enough to get you back and give you another chance to impress them further and they can see that with you there is the potential to become a success at the job they want you to fill.

Therefore, well done :)

Fine, except - I'm the only person in the running for this job! And more to the point, if I hadn't sent a letter saying "Hi, I'd like a job", they wouldn't be looking for anyone to fill a position.

My guess is that I'll be faced with a panel this time, rather than just the one interviewer.

Well if they're tkaing you on even though they don't really have a vacancy then they'll want to be doubly sure.

Ah, right. Yeah, I remember now. Well, what Taf said, then.

You'd never fit on a postcard. Tim. Tim would. But not you.

Ah, indeed I have - but then, Fnars are also true aren't they? :-)

Having more than one interview is standard hiring practice for most firms. Particularly if they're a fairly big company thye may have fairly rigid hiring proceedures. You'll probably meet a different set of people and they'll be looking at slightly different things. They may, for example, get to sit in with someone doing what you'll be doing (ask intelligent questions) or get to discuss the specific job they have in mind for you. Congrats though - it means that they genuinely have something they think you could do and think you could probably do it. Now they just have to double check.

it could be a difference of opinion

So you may see a different interviewer, a different mix of interviewers, or the first interviewer(s) plus someone else. But, like Jo said, it's not uncommon.

This is generally good news Niall! Don't break out the carbonated nonalchoholic cider though. :-)

My only advice for a postcard-sized addendum to your previously submitted materials is to not repeat yourself if possible.

Also, if you care about this sort of thing: you might want to wear a slightly different interview dress too, if possible...the "I have more than one suit" fashion message without the "I have loads of Armani, give me your petty job fools!" :-)

The downside being, of course, that I really do only have one suit.

Well, not worth knocking yourself out over it - but this is when shirt and tie varieties can become useful.

Or, if you really want to overdress, surely you have your Exam uniform and/or DJ hiding away somewhere. ;-p
