Following his assumption of dictatorial powers, [livejournal.com profile] drplokta, in his infinite wisdom and inestimable benevolence, has appointed me Minion i/c Genres. I now declare that the following things are True and have always been True:

1. That genres are fuzzy, and that there are no sharp lines dividing science fiction from fantasy from horror from crime from pirate stories. Arr!

2. That Cloud Atlas and 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale are sf novels, dammit.

3. Most importantly, that 'speculative fiction' is not a redundant categorisation (although it may, in time, prove to be a pretentious categorisation).

That is all. You may continue about your business as long as that business does not contravene this legislation or that of the other Minions. Further updates as events warrant.

None of those are actually commands of any sort...

I must get green_amber to write up what she learned about genre at her film class...

I like to think of it as thought-guidance for a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Aren't 1 and 3 contradictory...

Not at all. That cases exist in the borderlands doesn't mean that cases don't also exist in the heartlands. :)

Huzzah!

All hail the minion i/c Genres!

PS: So, these lines separating science fiction from fantasy... are they wavy lines? dotted lines? blurry lines? conga lines?

Date: 2005-03-02 09:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] coalescent.livejournal.com
Conga lines sound good. I say we go with those.

In time?

I think I shall have to apply to be Minion i/c WRONGHEADEDNESS.

You could appoint a Captain...

I pre-emptively refuse this appointment.

Ahhhhhhhhhh...

this'll be some kind of in-joke I've missed the point of, I suspect?

Won't be the first time... :D

The in-joke is merely Niall's wrongheadedness.

You're going to be first against the wall when the revolution comes, you know.

Wait! What am I saying? The revolution is here. Get against the wall, sunshine.

I adore that, after 1's ambivalence and uncertainty, you immmediately wrote the stringest nonsense of 2. God bless you, you utter wronghead.

Is Ban trying to say:

a) stringent?
b) strongest?
c) strangest?
d) all of the above?

From: [identity profile] snowking.livejournal.com
I demand you enumerate the stringy qualities of Niall's nonsense!

Date: 2005-03-02 10:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] immortalradical.livejournal.com
Simple. The question, 'how long is a piece of string' is as eternally unanswerable as, 'how far will Niall stoop to make SF mainstream'.

Date: 2005-03-02 10:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] snowking.livejournal.com
That's not a stringy quality at all. You suck.

You seem to be having some problems adjusting to the new world order. This is understandable. You may wish to refer to this to determine the best course of action in future.

Ours is a tragic tale of a fine friendship in youth turning into sour and embittered opposition once you achieved power and it all went to your head. From now on, you may call me Sexy and Adored Popular Pro-Elitism Revolutionary. Or SAPPER.

Date: 2005-03-02 11:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] snowking.livejournal.com
But you're not elite!

Or any of the three adjectives.

Or revolutionary.

He is sapping my will to live, though.

Maybe he should be made Minion i/c Sap?

I think [livejournal.com profile] drplotka should be informed of this blatant attempt to usurp his authority re: appointing minions.

Date: 2005-03-02 11:28 am (UTC)

Who's usurping anything? I was merely offering it as a suggestion for the consideration of He Who I Am Not Worthy To Name.

I saw a legislative need and I moved to fill it. It's called being proactive, that is.

I'm counter-revolutionary, now, clearly. And you've conflated 'the elite' with 'elitism', a mistake often made by people who Don't Understand.

2. That Cloud Atlas and 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale are sf novels, dammit.

Will you also be trimming the last chapter or so off The Handmaid's Tale so that it ends before it turns into a heap of rancid shit?

Date: 2005-03-03 08:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] coalescent.livejournal.com
I shall take that suggestion under advisement, but it may be out of my jurisdiction. You could always apply to be Minister i/c trimming the last chapter or so off The Handmaid's Tale so that it ends before it turns into a heap of rancid shit. :)
