Marginalia
Jan. 4th, 2005 03:03 pmMmm ... internet. If anyone's been wondering where I've been, the answer is 'having problems with my laptop'. I still can't get the wireless working again, but the good old-fashioned wired connection seems to be holding for now (the only problem being that in the absence of a VLEC, I'm somewhat shackled to the phone socket, which is not the most convenient location in my flat). Hope you're all well, but I reckon I've missed an easy thousand posts or so, so don't hold your breath waiting for me to get caught up. Feel free to link me for anything particularly exciting, though.

WANT THIS. And it's not even inconcievably expensive...
John Clute reviews the SFBC collection Between Worlds. I've just finished it myself, and was going to write something; now I won't bother (this keeps happening to me), except to note that Nancy Kress' story 'Shiva in Shadow' is surely one of the best of 2004.
Be careful not to get too much education, or you could turn liberal. [via

Coming soon: many posts about the best things from last year.
EDIT: You may notice that I now have a funky Chez Geek moodtheme. This comes courtesy of
tinyjo and all the props should be sent her way.

Date: 2005-01-04 03:55 pm (UTC)You might be able to get a ethernet cable of suitable length from a PC World (I think the nearest one to you is Slough).... I assume you are using ethernet and not *shudder* dialup.....
Sorry my suggestion fixed one thing but broke others! I'd forgotten that hackage that was required to get the wlan card working...... Is the person who set it up orginally able to give guidance?

Date: 2005-01-04 04:52 pm (UTC)I suspect the proper album version will prove to be an opportunity to trash my and Mr Itchy's musical taste, but I do promise to try and stick mainly to things most people will have heard of/seen in the shops, if not actually owned.
