In case anyone's missed it: Ursula le Guin's reaction to the Sci-Fi Channel Earthsea mini-series. I think I'll be avoiding it.

Other film news: Chris Weitz is no longer directing the His Dark Materials films. Yay! However, he is still writing them. Boo.

Also from everyone: fantastic pictures of the world's highest road bridge.

The Clarke-Bradbury Science Fiction Competition 2005 wants short stories or artwork that demonstrate why space elevators are cool.

Skeletons of cartoon characters. I can't remember where I saw this linked, but it's great. The Powerpuff girls are just scary.

NME has tracklisting and release date (1st March) for the new Doves album, Some Cities. You can also listen to the new single, which I think I've decided I rather like. [via [livejournal.com profile] chromewaves_net]

I feel obliged to link to this piece. It is about marginalia, after all...

And my resolution for this christmas: put some weight on in my cheeks. [photo by [livejournal.com profile] flyingsauce]

Don't know Chris Weitz. What's up with him?

I appear to have picked a particularly cool, worksafe time for pictures, including Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, and Legolas, and someone showing off their pretty retro, hip flat. *is so cool that i attract cool through the net*

In what sense 'up'?

I got this.

Well, I just wondered why it was bad news he was still writing the thing. The name's familiar, but that's it.

I got this.

I got cool and hottness. You got SF. It's like it knows us....

He did About A Boy, which ... didn't suck. Had a good soundtrack, anyway. He also did American Pie ...

Well, uh, this'll be a change for him. Thanks for the info.

A bit further down a soviet soldier snogging a cossack, so that was OK

You might have to go for implants there...

I don't think I'm prepared to go that far. :-p

Well, consider it for your arse. Quite the popular addition in the wake of J Lo in plastic'd Miami and Los Angeles. ;-)

I am not going to have cosmetic surgery on my ass, Zac. :-p

I like to pretend I don't need it.

Well...

If you lived more like an American (you are already automotive, so part way there), I'm sure you'd have the full cheeks and rounded arse without too much effort. ;-)

But hey, if 'colours' likes your boney butt ... you don't need the fat. ;-)

So now that I have planted enough subconcious worries, perhaps the horror dream will shift off of Hoggy and infect someone else. :-)

Ah, we're no longer together, sadly. Though I'm fairly certain it wasn't my boney butt that caused the problems, so your point may still be valid.

Ah

Sorry to hear ... but anyone who doesn't want to join in your geekiness is of questionable intent, really.

(saying that, I have to wonder about Larissa. ;-) Nah.)

Plenty more fish in the sea, which I'll be sure to remind you of should you return to angsty LJ entries.

Big hugs!

Zac, in the nicest possible way, you're in a hole. Stop digging.

Been catching it off and on the past couple of nights...

In a word, it's "pants." With appalling dialogue, and wooden Canadian actors. In fact, come to think of it, I'm generous in calling what they do 'acting.'

1. Very very pretty bridge. I weep at what will be built to replace the Bay Bridge. :-/

2. Yes, you desperately need some weighty cheeks. Didn't you have a grandma who pinched your cheeks in your youth?!? Well, eat lots of potatoes, fried oils, and become a new Catholic ... I understand the priests might yank you by your cheeks. ;-)

As is much of Catholicism, but that shouldn't stop one, should it? ;-)

(apologies to Catholics everywhere. I have very many Catholic friends, and they're most often the first ones to tell me how mad their religion is)

The bridge kicks ass with a boot made of burning reinforced concrete. I saw a maquette at the Royal Academy summer exhibition a whie ago; it's very nice. Also, anything that weighs going on a quarter of a million tonnes gets my vote. Jahre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jahre_Viking) Viking (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/jahre-viking.htm) 4 EVAH!!!!111 (incidentally, officially, and slightly M. Banksianly, designated a "Ship-shaped Oil Storage Unit").

The marginalia article is good, and also makes it perfectly clear what 'marginalia' means. Read it until you understand.

LJ-picturewise, i got TV/movie images, quiz results pictures, teenage nerds, and camwhores. Oh, and a blurry photo of a lego wedding. I have never managed to quite find the words for why i hate LJ; today, i realised that i didn't need words.

Chris Weitz at least went to Oxford, seemed to have some good ideas and can write. He isn't Tom Stoppard, but I wasn't a big fan of Enigma (which Stoppard did write) and thought that Shakespeare in Love was more in-joke than movie.

I loved About a Boy and I think that American Pie is actually pretty sharply observed.

There's also the fact that people can do things in different genres. If you told me the same person had directed Jabberwocky (slapstick gross-out comedy) and Brazil (brilliant social satire) I'd have been rather shocked too.
