Genius: "FACT! As of today, November 10, 2004, it is one year since 'Hey Ya' was released in the UK. So all you Beyonces and Lucy Lius and Babydolls GET OFF THE FLOOR.' And keep reading down to the 'note to DJs' at the end ...

Via [livejournal.com profile] tamaranth (several days ago), the Guardian interviews Neal Stephenson.

At Locus, Howard Waldrop and Lawrence Person like The Incredibles a whole damn lot.

Philip Pullman clearly never saw 'Isaac and Ishmael', or maybe just disagrees: "The Christian right in America is the mirror image of the Islamic fundamentalists," he says.

An adaptation of The Master and Margarita causes controversy: 'Russia's Orthodox church has reacted with dismay to a film of the seminal novel The Master and Margarita, saying it offers a version of the Gospel that is "nothing but negative" and fearing it will offend or confuse many believers.' Shocking.

NOTE TO DJs:
THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO START PLAYING 'CRAZY IN LOVE' AGAIN.

Hee!

Philip Pullman clearly never saw 'Isaac and Ishmael', or maybe just disagrees: "The Christian right in America is the mirror image of the Islamic fundamentalists," he says.

Oooh, new Lyra book. :-D And, I'm a bit more sceptical than he of what one film covering the whole trilogy is gonna be like.

Never did get around to reading Master and Margarita...

But not for two years. :-/

And, I'm a bit more sceptical than he of what one film covering the whole trilogy is gonna be like.

I don't think it does--there will be three films, the first of which is currently in production. Although I admit the article is not clear.

Ah! I don't read these things close enough. Feh.

Really? That's much better. I'd heard somewhere else a long time ago say one film and hadn't heard anything since. Glad to have been proven wrong.

Well, this article talks about a new film franchise, and I don't think one film generally counts as a franchise. But I'm sure I've read, or seen, Pullman saying that it would be a trilogy of films.

Interesting that it's being called Northern Lights and not The Golden Compass.

IMDB has it as The Golden Compass, not that that means much..

Interesting that it's being called Northern Lights and not The Golden Compass.

As far as I'm aware, Northern Lights was the original title for the first book: it may have got changed for overseas publication.

I'm quite looking forward to seeing the reaction of the Religious Right in Amerika to the third film in the series (or for that matter, to the unflattering depiction of Christianity throughout the trilogy), especially if Pullman's original is followed, and the death of God is featured. Heh, heh, let's see how that will play in the Red States.

I think you're right on both counts. I'm just a little surprised that they're not keeping with the altered version for the film, at least on the grounds that it's more consistent with the other two ('the [adjective] [artifact]').

Yup, Northern Lights was definitely the original title. And I'm happy they're keeping it since I like it better :)

On the panel on religion at Novacon John Courtenay Grimwood named The Master and the Margarita as one of the books that affected him deeply.

In an emotional sense? Or as a writer? Or both?

They were talking about books that resulted in 'epiphanies' (not necessarily religious/spiritual epiphanies) and he mentioned it as a book that had a big impact on him as a person and changed the way he thought. So more the emotional sense. But I suspect that if it affected him in the emotional sense, something of that will carry over into his professional life as a writer.

You mean the best kind, right? Music should be fun! Stop listening to Radiohead and get with the happy sound of omnipresent party pop.

I agree entirely. Well, I agree partly. OK, I think it really depends on your definition of 'fun'. But more importantly, I disagree that the experience you described would be fun. Under almost any definition. :-p

I'm fairly certain that appears at no point in the song. Are you by any chance thinking of 'ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHTAIEEE'?

This sounds suspiciously like a robot name to me. Do we have any proof that he's human?

Surely she meant that the lyrics are going round and round in her head. Not that "round and round" are the lyrics.
