Sue me. I was in the mood for something loud and brainless. And hey, xXx certainly delivers on that front.
Actually, it struck me as a weird film. I've never seen anything try quite so hard to be cool, yet give itself so little to work with. It was filmed like a series of music videos with the occasional segment of dialogue, but set in eastern europe - which, whilst admittedly pretty, is not the first place you think of to epitomise cool. The premise is similarly awkward; Xander Cage is a bad-ass extreme sports rebel dude (best line: "You hire someone to save the world, you better make sure they like it the way it is now"), but he ends up as the embodiment of patriotic duty. It's cool to serve your country, kids!
The 'splosions were pretty, though (if improbable). Plus, there was a trailer for The Two Towers, which by itself made up for any failings the main feature may have had.

Date: 2002-10-21 05:17 pm (UTC)all fluff sucks to some extent.
that's why it's fluff.
but as switch-off no-brainer fun, then yeah, the matrix works.
it's far superior to say.. american pie or any derivative of that particularly vile 'genre' of cinema.

Date: 2002-10-21 05:20 pm (UTC)if people want to watch shite, then i should really learn to stop commenting on it. just nobody get me started on the 'cruel intentions' is a good film opinion...
besides, i just finished the avril lavigne vs the backstreet boys one with craig, so i'm not ready for another one.

All I'll say is that I don't think fluff is inherently bad. It's just, well, fluff, and can be good or bad independently of that fact.
Alternatively: Is 'The Shroud Of Rahmon' a bad episode of Angel? :-)

i'll only have to deliberately provoke you.

I think they're miles apart! 'The Matrix' is a somewhat brainless thrill ride of FX, but it does have good cyberpunk/sci-fi pedigree. 'American Pie,' well, that's merely another addition to the stinking heap of American high school genre films (albeit without the deliberate horror filter placed over it, typical of the genre) that have launched the careers of countless faces, such as Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez... Even then, 'American Pie' did have marginal value for tapping the Willow-actress from 'Buffy.' Watch that $ mana flow! ;-p

Date: 2002-10-22 03:11 pm (UTC)i generally don't bother trying to decide between different types because it's not worth my time, but i take no truck with those who do.

Say Niall, doesn't this sort of remind you of the OUSFG newgroup we more or less locked everyone else out of with our constant barrages? :-)
