xXx

Sue me. I was in the mood for something loud and brainless. And hey, xXx certainly delivers on that front.

Actually, it struck me as a weird film. I've never seen anything try quite so hard to be cool, yet give itself so little to work with. It was filmed like a series of music videos with the occasional segment of dialogue, but set in eastern europe - which, whilst admittedly pretty, is not the first place you think of to epitomise cool. The premise is similarly awkward; Xander Cage is a bad-ass extreme sports rebel dude (best line: "You hire someone to save the world, you better make sure they like it the way it is now"), but he ends up as the embodiment of patriotic duty. It's cool to serve your country, kids!

The 'splosions were pretty, though (if improbable). Plus, there was a trailer for The Two Towers, which by itself made up for any failings the main feature may have had.

let me see: you went to xXx and you're actually surprised that it sucked?
you cannot be niall harrison, he's not usually so dizzy of mind.

I believe I've said this before, but:

You're special, alright.

Babes.

I didn't think it sucked. I was in the mood for 'splosion silliness, and I didn't get bored. It just struck me that what the film was trying to be and what it actually was didn't quite match up.

that's even more upsetting in a way when a film can't even be successful pure fluff.
for reference see: Matrix, The

You are citing The Matrix as a good example of such fluff, right?

Just checking.

well if i was to be strict about it, then there is no such thing as good fluff.
all fluff sucks to some extent.
that's why it's fluff.

but as switch-off no-brainer fun, then yeah, the matrix works.
it's far superior to say.. american pie or any derivative of that particularly vile 'genre' of cinema.

while i'm here, i just want to say that i know everyone thinks i'm a snob so don't think for a moment that you can lure me into a debate, harrison.
if people want to watch shite, then i should really learn to stop commenting on it. just nobody get me started on the 'cruel intentions' is a good film opinion...

besides, i just finished the avril lavigne vs the backstreet boys one with craig, so i'm not ready for another one.

Dang.

All I'll say is that I don't think fluff is inherently bad. It's just, well, fluff, and can be good or bad independently of that fact.

Alternatively: Is 'The Shroud Of Rahmon' a bad episode of Angel? :-)

Hold on now, how can you classify both 'The Matrix' and 'American Pie' in the same generic fluff category?

I think they're miles apart! 'The Matrix' is a somewhat brainless thrill ride of FX, but it does have good cyberpunk/sci-fi pedigree. 'American Pie,' well, that's merely another addition to the stinking heap of American high school genre films (albeit without the deliberate horror filter placed over it, typical of the genre) that have launched the careers of countless faces, such as Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez... Even then, 'American Pie' did have marginal value for tapping the Willow-actress from 'Buffy.' Watch that $ mana flow! ;-p

fluff is fluff.
i generally don't bother trying to decide between different types because it's not worth my time, but i take no truck with those who do.

yes yes, film snob at work. move along.

I don't have anything to add. I just want to see if I can keep this thread going long enough that it falls off the edge of the screen.

Won't work, though. There's some clever compression algorithm thing that comes into play when threads get too long.

it starts to thread itself eventually.
my first ever LJ post had to be threaded to fit all the responses in. i do believe we were talking about nothing :)

Nothing is the best thing to talk about. It is an endless topic simply because it has no beginning. With it being nothing an' all, how could it?
