David Pringle, editor of Interzone for the past twenty-mumble years, is stepping down. He'll be replaced by Andy Cox of The Third Alternative, who will then, at least for a while, be editing two very different magazines.
Meanwhile, Locus is reporting that Asimov's editor Gardner Dozois is also moving on (no separate news link except at (go figure) SciFi Wire, but blog entries all over the place). He'll be replaced, as of January 2005, by current executive editor Sheila Williams; it's not clear whether or not Dozois will continue his Year's Best series. However, since the news says that Dozois is leaving to focus on his writing, my guess is that he won't want to spend much time reading for and editing anthologies.
I think of Asimov's and Interzone as the two most significant short fiction SF magazines. Analog has a longer history, and F&SF and SciFiction are at least equal in quality, but it's Asimov's and Interzone that I think of as defining short sf...although this may be not least because Dozois and Pringle have been editors of their respective magazines for almost as long as I've been alive. And now, inevitably, the definition is going to change. On balance, this is probably a good thing; it's certainly an interesting thing.
(As a footnote, this year has already seen the relaunch of Argosy and will soon see the debut of PS Publishing's magazine Postscripts. Both look pretty impressive.)

This probably makes me a great deal sadder than the people who squee at properly squee-worthy things. The first issue looks so very good though! I bought my subscription two days ago...
What are the odds that anyone else would like to see Peter Crowther as a GoH at a con sometime? He's someone I'd love to see speaking about SF and about short stories.
