Poll: two slices of bread, plus filling, then bisected. Is the result one sandwich or two?

One. Number of sandwiches is dependent on number of rounds of bread, IMO.

One, definitely.

Two. I consider a sandwich to be the single thing you pick up and eat. If someone had a bag of them and you asked for a sandwich, you'd only get one, wouldn't you?

And if you cut them into quarters, you have four mini-sandwiches.

Well, yes, cut and dried you would think but... what if the two slices of bread are replaced by a baguette, and the resulting sandwich then cut into two portions. Obviously now sandwiches.

Logically, in the example above, we have to say two sandwiches else we destroy the fabric of society.

Completely wrong - what you are referring in that example is, of course, *half* a sandwich. Half sandwiches should always be wrapped in pairs to make a whole sandwich - I mean - what's the point otherwise?

Don't get me started about sandwich quarters - buffet sandwiches are a *completely* different beast ;-)

One, obviously. Anyone who says differently *cough*[livejournal.com profile] pikelet*cough* is clearly wrongheaded. And possibly smells of wee.

Wrapped? In pairs? Pfah. Waste of time and packaging. One plastic bag, many sandwiches.

Buffet sandwiches are the same as normal sandwiches. Only smaller. And sometimes have stranger fillings.

And then there's baguette sandwiches - do you have a set length of baguette you define as one sandwich? IMO, any length of baguette can be a sandwich, so if you cut one in half you'll have two.

Don't confuse matters by bringing in fancy swanky continental bread! Who in their right mind would make a sandwich from a single slice of bread? Total insanity!

Hah - Stewart says a sandwich made from one piece of bread folded over isn't a sandwich at all. I say it is. And it doesn't have another half.

One, unless there are two of you.

Only old people smell of wee, which would be you :-p

And if I cut something in two, I expect to end up with two. It's not my fault you people can't count.

Pah

And if I cut something in two, I expect to end up with two.

Which is odd, because if I cut something in two, I expect to end up with *two halves*.

It's not my fault you people can't count.

It's not my fault you can't do fractions. No wonder you still struggle to call yourself an accountant :-P

"One piece of bread in a sandwich is just wrong
I'm not sure what it is - but it isn't a sandwich....."

There we have it.

But a sandwich wrap (note the word sandwich) is a big flat tortilla-like thing... If you *rolled up* the piece of bread, I guess it could be a wrap. Still be a rolled-up sandwich too though :)

OK - we have now entered the bizzaro-land where a Big Mac is a sandwich..... Obviously anything breadlike with anything edible in-between - be that rolled, sliced or stuffed is a sandwich! By your logic a doner kebab is a sandwich!

From: [identity profile] kalorlo.livejournal.com
Logic? :)

There are limits. I wouldn't call a sandwich wrap a sandwich - I'd call it a sandwich wrap... Is very closely related to sandwiches :)
I might call the rolled-up bread a rolled-up sandwich though.

A Big Mac is obviously a burger rather than a sandwich. A very flat roll that's been cut into two, however, is close enough to a sandwich to be one, while something like a Napoli roll isn't. Apply a test of least astonishment for getting one of these when you ask for a sandwich :)
IMO, pitta breads with filling are distinctive enough to be called pitta breads rather than sandwiches - and when getting a kebab, the kebab is the point rather than the pitta bread, so you call it a kebab.

If someone cuts a sandwich in two at Eastercon but there is no one there to eat it is it still two?
