I think that's more-or-less where I'd have put myself, although there were some questions (mostly the economic ones) where I answered 'no opinion' through ignorance rather than a strict lack of an opinion. I also had the usual problem with this sort of test where my response to general statement x is 'well, it depends on the circumstances!'

I'm also not sure exactly what the idealist/pragmatist axis actually means, in practical terms, and in any case I'm not entirely convinced that political opinions can be accurately represented in two dimensions. So I guess it's a good thing that the test is being used to examine whether those assumptions are valid.

But all that said, yes, it's more-or-less where I'd put myself.

My full results are here. The test is here.

I am slightly more pragmatic, and just as left as, Tony Benn. Scary.

Even scarier, they plonked my little red cross right on top of Charles Kennedy. *Wants to be Tony Benn!* Wah!

Well no. But it's better than the standard left/right 1D axis I was taught in school. Here's me btw:

me, too. and next time i do something like this, I'll be somewhere different, too, depending on my mood. :)

last time, I was definitely in the idealistic left box, but near the pragmatic-idealistic line. but now....

agree with niall on some of the questions i wanted to answer, "depending on the circumstances" or just "i don't know."

I came out as about half a centimetre to the left of Ken Livingstone, and almost eactly half way between pragmatic/idealistic.

Yeah, took those before...

This matrix is often used by libertarians in public arenas to garner interest and even support.

Nope-- I designed it to show that the "political compass" one is dishonest. From the other pages on the site you can see exactly how the calculation is done, which should be enough to convince you that there's no political agenda in it.

Your use of this device is irrespective of how others use it - it is their use that I comment on.

No, it's a different survey.

Look, I don't want to belabour the point, but you cannot possibly comment on a very similar survey system using an identical plot/mapping concept, that I personally took many years ago, unless you were there as well. For that reference, I was in Virginia in 1997 at the time.

If you take issue with others using a tool as yours for their political purposes - take it up with them.

Incidentally, I found similar flaws with the model - the problems of context, two dimensions, definitions, and consequences.

Incidentally, I was ...

to the right of Charles Kennedy, but not as right as Tony Benn.

I would also concur that it 'depends' a great deal, and sometimes I decided purely on the strictest definition of a word. For example, I do believe that 'aggressive' foreign policy can stop terrorism, but I totally disagree that 'bellicose' foreign policy can stop terrorism.

Likewise there were a lot of 'yes, but...'
