Top Five Types Of Song For Which I Am A Sucker:
5. Almost anything sung by a folksy or country-eseque (but not outright folk or country) singer-songwriter (see: Ryan Adams, Gemma Hayes...)
4. Almost anything by indie-schmindie bands. Likely to be angsty. May also be 'anthemic' (see below). (See: Starsailor, Lowgold)
3. Most songs likely to be described as 'anthemic'. More often than not, these will feature 'sumptuous string arrangements' and a 'soaring chorus' (see: 'Oh Yeah' by Ash; 'The Drowning Years' by the Delgadoes)
2. Non-ballad songs featuring a piano (see: 'Where's Summer B?' by Ben Folds Five)
1. Songs with a fast drum and/or bass line and a slower melody (see: 'Where I End And You Begin' by Radiohead; 'Grace Under Pressure' by Elbow)
Note that this order is subject to change. Also note that songs may combine two or more of these traits (see, much as I know I'll be mocked for admitting it, 'Clocks' by Coldplay. Angsty, check; faster drums and bass than melody, check; prominent piano, check; likely to be described as 'anthemic', check).

Niall, i'm not even going to bother mocking your taste in music. It simply isn't necessary.

Date: 2003-09-15 02:48 am (UTC)Both bands are really bland and non-descript.
Travis can be filed in the same place as Oasis - student friendly rock-pop songs, generally well written. The lack of a Gallagher ego is an advantage.
Coldplay are just too angsty for their own good and the songs are just bland. Give me Radiohead any day of the week....

Date: 2003-09-15 03:12 am (UTC)I quite like Coldplay actually, but Radiohead stomp all over them in terms of talent and imagination. Particularly Where I end and you begin. Travis - pah. Harmless froth.

Date: 2003-09-15 04:03 am (UTC)Comparing Coldplay with Radiohead is like comparing chalk with cheese surely, they're filling two quite different niches in the musical spectrum.
Coldplay make good bouncy sing-along guitary stuff, Radiohead are arty and innovative and more intellectual. I like them both equally. Am going to see Radiohead in a few weeks, yay!
Travis are... bland and inoffensive fluff.

They have their moments of angst, I think. But you're right, they're not in the same league as Radiohead.
MUSIC MATHS
Coldplay + Muse + Elbow = Radiohead.

Date: 2003-09-15 04:12 am (UTC)We must have different definitions of bouncy and sing-along. For instance, mine is tending more to Barenaked Ladies/Ben Folds 5 jaunty tunes.
Whereas Coldplay are kinda down yet melancholy.
But hey, I like Starsailor so I shouldn't comment :)

Date: 2003-09-15 04:50 am (UTC)And again, speaking of over-hyped ...
I second the opinion!
I find Coldplay too Radiohead-cloning ... frankly, there wouldn't have been Coldplay without Radiohead.
Granted, Coldplay has diverged a bit and broken into some of their own territory, but so has Radiohead evolved and grown, a bit.
Oddly enough, as a newcomer to both bands at the same time, I sense so much greater quality in Radiohead than Coldplay.
