At the risk of setting myself up for mockery:
Niall attempts to learn English, or whatever language you care to teach it, by breaking down the sentences you type in, remembering words, connections between words, the number of times a particular connection has occured, and start/end sentence markers.
[...]
And of course there's the old hook-it-up-to-irc idea, due any time now...

the program... sorry *g*

I used to spend hours reading over my schoolmate Vicky's conversations with Niall, which she used to print off on an old-skool daisy roll printer and bring in for our amusement.

Unfortunately I can't get that download to work. I really want to though.

Well, you've never done that before.

Tim's Twiki, you're Dr Theopolis.

And I've just found out Dennis Haybert was in Buck Rogers...

I guess him and Keifer pass time on the set by comparing previous terrible haircuts.

Pffft.

Anyway, I think we should set this up as a bot. He can speak for me in my absence. Who has the know-how?

Non-Intelligent-AMOS-Language-Learner

I had a version of this for the Amiga back in about 1991 - coded, unsurprisingly, in AMOS.

Talked gibberish, but it was better than ELIZA, at least.

ah, Niall

lacking real workmates, I debate problems and prioritizing with a NIALL dictionary called "workmate". He often comes up with interesting/useful suggestions -- the trick is to keep on subject and remember to address it in the vocative a lot.

But he's only got another twenty words in him before his tiny head explodes! And he can learn no more. Then he'll become a fortune cookie you can only talk to until you say a new word.

I have some dictionaries at home which say other things.

Mock! Mock! Mock!

The algorithm it uses is famous and ancient - i first came across it under the name Dissociated Press (http://catb.org/esr/jargon/html/D/Dissociated-Press.html). I'll have a go at writing one that reads your RSS feed ...
