Buffy Comic
Aug. 21st, 2003 11:51 amEarly in season six of Buffy and season three of Angel, there was a 'non-crossover' in which the newly resurrected Buffy met up with Angel. It was a non-crossover because it happened off-screen. A few months later, Jane Espenson wrote a comic about the incident; we don't find out what actually happened, though, because the comic is written from the point of view of the rest of the scoobies speculating. On the other hand, it's quite fun, and it's now online on the BBC Buffy site. The plot is actually fairly neatly tied into what we were seeing in the show at the time, and it makes me remember how much potential season six had, back before it all went wrong...

Date: 2003-08-21 05:33 am (UTC)I'd say it was, to be honest. It definitely had the most squandered potential - particularly in the Willow storyline. The sudden transition from abuse-of-power Willow to literal-junkie Willow was clumsy and forced - and it was swapping an interesting story for a frankly dull one. Then there's the huge tract in the middle of the season in which the same thing happens over and over and over again (although to be fair, S7 suffered somewhat from this, too). Then there's the fact that they spent all the money on (a) the season premiere, (b) the musical and (c) the season finale - far more disproportionately than usual - which meant that the episodes even looked naff ('Hell's Bells', anyone?) Factor in the pathetic reasons given to cover Tony Head's absence (Giles leaving just when Buffy needs him most? Don't buy it) and the fact that Dawn becomes horrendously annoying for a large number of episodes for no good reason, and you've got yourself a distinctly sub-par season. There are high points - 'After Life', the musical, 'Dead Things', 'Normal Again' - but not many of them, and not enough to salvage the whole, IMO.
