I just had a call from my solicitor. Apparently, having enthusiastically pushed for tomorrow as completion date, the people selling the flat I'm buying have failed to move all their belongings out. So they want to have the weekend to move out, and complete on Monday. Which I wouldn't mind except, as I said, they're the ones who originally wanted tomorrow.

This has several effects. Firstly, it's cutting things a little fine; if completion doesn't happen on monday, my solicitor has to send all my mortage money back to Abbey National and re-request it. Secondly, for various reasons it means I won't actually be able to do any serious moving in until the 28th. Which, annoyingly, is after my birthday.

Gah.

In slightly better news, with any luck Cory Doctorow will be coming to talk to [livejournal.com profile] ousfg next wednesday. We need to check we've got enough people to make it worthwhile, though, so interested parties should make themselves known here.

What arses.

I'm in on the Cory thing despite having to travel to a shitty, backwater hick town.

You say this about Oxford, coming from Scotland?!

Other than the fact I was trolling (caught one!) I lived in Edinburgh. Which has the biggest arts festival in Europe. So yeah.

Capital city trumps weirdo town.

Admittedly I'm basing all my knowledge of Oxford from the fact it's just like Cambridge and everyone from either town disagrees.

Yep, but only when drunks, drugs, and yucky accents is what you're after. I much prefer Oxford to Edinburgh, even factoring in the festival. It's a much more manageable size of city for everyday life. And it's got cool people in it :-)

Arguably, I've got one of the odder accents here (considering my, um, heritage), but Scottish? Kicks the ASS. It = GOOD.

Did you see trainspotting? I hate that side of Edinburgh accents. Strong Glasgow ones are much worse, though. As for having weird accents, mine's a cross between a mild Edinburgh accent and an American one, with more emphasis on the former most of the time. What's your um-heritage, anyway?

Dutch/Italian. But I sound like an American of non-specific origin. 'cause of International/American schools and all that.

Silly English licensing laws.

Edinburgh might best be described as a Capital town, it's a pretty odd and anachronistic place.

I love it here though, I've been here all my life, and I don't really regret it, even if I travelled around and tried different places I know I'd at the very least miss this place dearly.

On the other hand (back to the matter in hand) SF events here aren't as frequent as I'd like, on the other hand I do get to randomly bump into many of my favourite authors, because they are local to here as well.

It's too big to be a town. It always feels huge when I'm back there from Oxford. And I hate what they keep doing to all the bus routes, since I can barely find my way into town these days. I never really knew where to hang out when I lived there (other than places like Forbidden Planet, but then I was a teenager at the time), but tips from current Edinburgh folk would be welcome!

1. So the flat is in Oxford? That wasn't clear to me...or perhaps I just plumb forgot.

2. re: Cory Doctorow ... v. neat, I rather like his meme-conscious description for his 'Eastern Standard Tribe' book...

I wish I could be there. :-(

No, the flat's in Maidenhead. What did I say to make it sound like it was in Oxford?

You and [livejournal.com profile] purpletigron should swap war stories :-)

On the Cory Doctorow thing: give the Reading SF Group mailing list a heads-up. I'm mildly intersted, but not sure if I'll have time. How easy is it to get back from an OUSFG venue to Reading of an evening?

Two other folks who might be able and keen to come along/bring other warm bodies are

Ben Jeapes, who lives in Abingdon

Steve Jeffery, who coordinates an SF fan pub meeting on the last Thursday of the month, at The Plough in Wolvercote. They might be interested, if OUSFG doesn't already have regular contact with them.

Aha!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Ben Jeapes in on our announce list, so when we get round to sending out a message (which should be Real Soon Now), he'll get it. I'll forward a copy to him, just in case.

Steve Jeffery is one of the people on the end of peverel at aol dot com, and would be worth contacting; i don't think we have any contact with him.

Oh, I was planning to. Although surely they all read NTK? :-)

Not hard. Trains from Oxford to Reading are regular until about 23:30, if memory serves. Journey time is 30-45 minutes, depending which service you catch.

Have you exchanged contracts? If you can you can slam them for interest. Exactly the same happened to me and we got some money from the stupid bint we were buying from.

No, it's all going to be happening at the same time. It's not the end of the world, exactly, just irritating.
