Well, that was reassuring. The flat is just about as nice as I remembered it, which I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be; although getting my bed up the stairs really is going to be very interesting.

I've also acquired a rather nice nearly-new futon, a nearly-new freezer, a moderately old fridge and an old, small microwave for UKP150. Which will do me fine. I need to buy a washer/drier, and some form of small table, but other than that I think I'm sorted.

Various bits of documentation turned up from my solicitor today, too, so it looks like I'll be going in to have The Talk sometime next week. And then, well, it won't be long at all...

Futon query

Couch-convertible, or a proper Japanese futon meant for tatami level above floor?

Either way, are you looking for a couch as well?

What entertainment systems will you emplace?

What culinary infrastructure do you plan besides your insta-noodle facilities? :-)

addendum - wot? no electric kettle???

Speak english, man! Or provide illustrations. I have no idea what you're talking about. It's a wooden-framed thing that can function as either sofa or bed depending how you configure it. That's my definition of futon.

Either way, are you looking for a couch as well?

Exactly how big do you think this apartment is?

IOW, no.

What entertainment systems will you emplace?

If I can mange it, all the ones I have: TV, DVD, PS2, Stereo, VCR. Plus computer, of course. The current owners are using it as their computer room, so there's clearly net connection available, but I forgot to ask what kind.

What culinary infrastructure do you plan besides your insta-noodle facilities? :-)

Insta-pasta facilities.

addendum - wot? no electric kettle???

Of course I've got a kettle. And I'll be buying a washer/dryer. That wasn't a complete list of Stuff, just the Stuff I bought last night.

re: futon -

Yes, that's a convertible. Your definition of a futon is very...Western.

re: size - I thought you had more than a room.

re: insta-pasta ... ah, at least that gets us into soups as well. An electric hot plate beside the microwave?

re: electric kettle - GOOD! Otherwise you citizenship would have to be rescended and you'd be left to the plague-strewn migrant masses (read [livejournal.com profile] pikelet's entry for reference). :-)

Ah, I had thought he was referring to the non-western style one. it's hard to think of futon as convertible. to me, the image of a futon is pretty much ground level. it's weird to imagine that type of futon doubling as a sofa. :)

Yeah, most convertibles aren't very good for either function...besides there's nothing quite like a futon atop a tatami...mmmmm...luxury!

(not for those who like uber-soft surface though)

Well, this one was pretty comfortable, I thought. For sitting on, at least.

Now now, no need to be cruel to those who can never appreciate the woven wonderland of tatami and futon...

But... but... not be cruel? Why?

Don't forget chairs! Very easy to do but you'll need at least one. I recommend Office World for cheap + long-lasting seating.

Glad the futon was tall enough for you, my first (second-hand) futon lasted about 7 years, they're very practical.

Chairs are on my radar, yes. Although I think I'm most likely to get chairs with whatever table I buy. Maybe.
