Looks like they've screwed the whole thing up royally, and touts have managed to get hold of large numbers of tickets, which they're now of course selling for ridiculous sums on Ebay. Michael Eavis reckons they might be able to do something about that: Ananova.
I wasn't gonna go anyway, but sympathies Niall, hope you manage to get a ticket somehow...
Because it's April 1st. What are they supposed to do, use a different date to indicate that it's not a hoax?
The fact that there are tickets for sale on Ebay with prices already up to 3 times the face value, and that the official sites message board is filled with complaints from people who failed to get a ticket would indicate to me that it's not an April fool, and if it had been, someone would by now have realised that it had got way out of hand and said so.

Oh well, I can't miss what I've never been to (a rationale that seems to work equally well for ecological rapine as it does missed live concert opportunities)...
Aw, whatsamatter, didn't you like being abused by every crusty between here and timbuktu? (or are you just thinking, yup, I steward, and they'll give me the shift to clash with REM...)
Or if you don't want to steward, you could volunteer to go with Greenpeace, and work in their field. Though vague knowledge of Greenpeace campaigns may be useful for that, so possibly not your best option. Similar volunteer work/favourite band clash problems could occur as well.
eh, oh, you're right, sorry. I've stewarded with so many different people at Glastonbury over the years I forget who has and hasn't been.
Stewarding for Oxfam isn't so bad for missing bands -- usually you only miss one set (stewarding shifts are something like 11pm-7am, 7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm), and given that your shift sessions run from Wednesday to Sunday, you tend to get through at least one and sometimes two shifts before the festival even starts. Last year I finished on Friday afternoon after (no tears here) missing Coldplay and Nene Whatsis (you kow, the warbling woman who looks like a Bennetton advert). Though I also missed The Doves, which I wasn't so happy about. Plus, people swap shifts around (though I never have been desperate enough to see any one thing to do this).
You work three shifts, usually on the gates, ripping tickets or directing traffic. Stewards get to camp in the Steward's field, which is serviced (own toilets, showers, food tent and bar) and above the water table, five free meals (which usually translates into five decent veggie/vegan breakfasts), coffee and tea and a bus-ride from Bristol train station there and back. You can ask to be assigned shifts with friends.
Stewards need to be on the level, so you need a current or former Oxfam employee, volunteer or Steward to give you a reference. I'm happy to do this for you.

In future reference - if you don't want me pointing out that the festival doesn't happen in my home town, etc - you might want to call it by it's proper name. "Pilton Pop Festival".
Well, according to the website, the full name is the 'Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts', although I know it's not actually in Glastonbury.
But apologies, I'm sure no slight on your home town was intended. As I recall from having been there many years ago, it's a very nice place. :)
Everyone in this area knows it as Pilton Pop, because it is actually in Pilton, not Glastonbury.
I just love it though, when all the tourists come here and just go "Hey man! where's the fest?" and I go "It's 12 miles away in that direction. Have a nice day"

I'm treating this with scepticism until I see other confirms. Dated anything but April 1st.

That's just...wrong. It's my optimistic streak that was making me wish it be a hoax, since I was, well, planning on going :-/

Wow, that was another good episode. I have an envelope with your name on it ready to post first thing tomorrow ;-)
you're not going to steward this year?

Date: 2003-04-01 02:04 pm (UTC)I really don't want to steward, either - too much of the 'missing bands' issue. But if that's the only way to get a ticket... :-/

Should you decide you want to steward.

I don't see it wearing Nike and appearing on MTV.
Damn you all!
