Well, it went out in style.

Final standings of the alt.* 5-star polls:

1. 'Serenity' 4.72
2. 'War Stories' 4.55
3. 'Ariel' 4.52
4. 'Objects In Space' 4.41
5. 'Out Of Gas' 4.07
6. 'Our Mrs Reynolds' 4.06
7. 'Jaynestown' 3.81
8. 'Safe' 3.70
9. 'Bushwhacked' 3.64
10. 'Shindig' 3.46
11. 'The Train Job' 3.10

Mean: 4.00

A couple of things to note: The episode ratings improved almost constantly whilst the show was on the air, from 'The Train Job' to 'Serenity'. And whilst it's probably true that 'Serenity', airing after the news of cancellation, received some sympathy votes, 4.72 still makes it the highest rated episode in any alt.* poll, ever. For comparison, 'Reunion' got 4.66; 'Reprise' 4.43; 'Fool For Love' 4.68; 'Once More, With Feeling', 4.65. Nothing for any other show comes close, except for a few episodes of Dark Angel such as 'Freak Nation', which rated 4.44.

Farscape isn't polled. It might have been interesting if it had been.

All of which means nothing, except that the fans really started to like Firefly. Hopefully those last few episodes will make it to DVD.

...and it might not be dead...

Well, it went out in style.

I heard rumours that UPN were looking to pick it up. Is this spurious?

It is believed that Joss Whedon is trying to get UPN to pick it up. Certainly fan campaigns have been organised with that aim in mind. Whether or not it's actually going to happen is anybody's guess; the cynic in me suspects not.

I would, mind you, be fascinated to see how things would pan out if it did happen - whether UPN would pair it with Buffy or with Enterprise, for instance. And who knows, Firefly could end up doing for Enterprise what B5 did for DS9...

Can you check what the highest UMTA five-star result has been (not Buffy - OMWF affects that - and bar the latest Amnesty)?

I think it's around 4.70ish...

4.709, for 'Sleep Tight'. Mind you, over in umtb 'Passion' got 4.788.

Considering the alt.* votes are normally harsher than their uk.* counterparts, though, 'Serenity' still done good.

Is that it, then? I thought there might be one more episode after Serenity, but is there not?

That's what the link at the end of my post is about. In theory, there are three more episodes: 'Heart Of Gold' (originally planned to air between 'War Stories' and 'Objects In Space'), and two more that are in final production right now. Fox claims they'll air these at some point; I'm rather more sceptical. But the man Minear says they're bound and determined to get the lot out on DVD, whatever happens.
