I don't really accept asylum seekers as a useful or accurate comparison, but if the astronauts are asylum seekers, they're asylum seekers with the memetic equivalent of virulent and terminal rabies. Or, what [livejournal.com profile] communicator said.

As to your second point, again, I don't think 'tragedy' is equivalent to 'ok, really, if a little bit sad'. I think 'Houston Houston' is an utterly devastating story; I think where you're being lazy is not taking the time to pay attention to what the women's society is really like, or what their motivations are, or why the men react to them in the ways they do, or what the implications of those reactions are.

I don't know what my reaction to a gender-reversed story would be, because I've never read it, indeed, never come across a deliberately all-male world in sf (as opposed to the effectively all-male worlds of 50s sf, which is clearly where the astronauts come from); but I'd be interested to do so.
