I got the distinct impression that Knight's confusion was not about somthing that doesn't fit his preconceptions, but at the fact that the book doesn't make it clear which, or how many, of the possible interpretations is/are valid. In fact, I'd suggest that Westerfield is the one having some trouble with his preconceptions in that blog entry.
