Via Tom and Whedonesque: Five is going to start showing Buffy early-evening on Saturdays, starting with 'Welcome to the Hellmouth' on 19th March. Hmm. Does that mean it's going to be clashing with Doctor Who ...?

Yup - but who watched C5 anyway?

I was just wondering if it was at all tactical on Five's part, since the shows probably compete for similar audiences.

Possibly - but I imagine that new telefantasy will win out over Buffy that all the fans will already have on VHS/DVD...

For the fans, yeah, but I was thinking of casual viewers. Sitting down on Saturday evening, thinking, "hmm... I've got an hour to kill. I could watch some dross on ITV, or Doctor Who on BBC1, or Buffy on Five ..."

It probably won't be significant. Just a passing thought, is all.

I think it probably counts as desparation from 5 - it isn't like they aren't prone to apeing other channels in an attempt to get market share...

That said - Saturday teatimes *are* traditionally telefantasy time on 5 - Charmed and Dark Angel both aired on early Saturday evenings.

And they had Hercules and Xena on Saturday early evenings for years when the channel first started.

I think this just proves how little I watch C5. :)

They've got The Dead Zone at the minute, and I've been meaning to watch it for ages, but somehow I always forget.

i saw it a lot on the SciFi channel. It looked like it might have been more interesting than I originally gave it credit for.

I really quite liked The Dead Zone, but I'm a bit behind on as I've only seen the first couple of seasons.

Also my dad, because of that classic Channel 5 combination of CSI and then bad movies starring Charles Bronson and/or Rutger Hauer.

Channel 5 is definitely our household's third favourite channel, verging on first equal, due to combination of CSI; Law and Order:Criminal Intent featuring Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket proving the Riemann Hypothesis; Dumber and Dumber (the only non-kiddy programme Small requests by name apart from Stars in their Eyes (RIP Tommy Vance)) and a constant stream of documentaries called Monster Killer Aeroplane Bridge Collisions for Him. Even my mother has been suckered in by their steady stream of excellent Fine Art docos (essentially they send Tim Marlow to look at the big Matisse exhibition so that you don't have to go yourself).

Without CSI, Channel 5 would probably have folded by now. :-)
