Did you come across it at uni? I know it through imsoc and ousfg; I assumed it was fairly widespread, but it appears not. I don't know the actual origin.

Not knowingly - unless my occasional suggestions on this theme were unconsciously influenced by someone else. I haven't encountered the form of words previously, just the idea that some names or phrases sound like they must be music groups.
