Carnival

Today was Maidenhead Carnival. It's almost the first town carnival I've been to in any serious fashion; for the past four years I've been in Oxford, and before that I wasn't really interested.

It was good, though. I'm sure the weather helped, but it was well-attended - there was even, at times, a feeling of Maidenhead as a community, which is a rare thing indeed. There was a parade around lunchtime which had about half an hour's worth of floats; all sorts of street performers strewn around the High Street during the day; a french market, including a rather wonderful biscuit stall; and all sorts of other bits and pieces. The evening event was an open-air riverside concert. The programme was eclectic: Western themes rubbing shoulders with Handel, the inevitable Land Of Hope And Glory, and the 1812 Overture. The last two of these featured impressive background fireworks displays, seen (at least from my vantage point) through a scattering of tree cover, which made for some interesting effects.

All in all, a pretty good day. And for future reference, everyone should note that bags are far superior to sticks as a method of candy floss delivery, for reasons of both convenience (including ease of sharing) and stickiness.

Mmm, candy floss.
