This month's Q magazine has a 'glossary of rock', which includes the following:

Indie (n. adj.) 1. c1986 Scratchy, angular music with in-built hostility to macho rock posing, usually signed to independent (ie "indie") labels, eg. The Shop Assistants. 2. c1991 Slightly less scratchy music with reduced hostility to macho rock posing, signed to whoever offered the most cash, eg Kingmaker. 3. c1995 Apparently any music made by British people - usually blokes - with guitars, eg Menswear. 4. c2002 In light of the word's application to Toploader, the EU Genre Working Party is in emergency session.
