Hmm. For some reason, when you do it it doesn't bother me so much! Maybe because I've never associated you with a particular icon. Unlike, say, brassyn and Afro Ken...

Also, there was a time when hawleygriffen started using one of despotliz' icons (or possibly vice-versa). That confused me. :)

Yes. Icons help me identify people, and if they're constantly changing it makes identification that little bit harder. I do love the "Whuffie" icon, but I'm used to your swirl now. It'd look wrong (and be confusing) if you switched.

Generic fandom icons are especially confusing, as so many people have ones that are similar in style. And I'm getting especially confused with snowking's new Keira Knightley fandom icons as they make me think that he's a girl, for two reasons: 1) it's mostly girls who have generic fandom style icons, and 2) it's a picture of a girl. (Sorry snowking - they are lovely pictures, but the fact that it's you using them messes with my head.)

I've toyed with the idea of having particular icons for particular types of post - so one icon for reviews, one icon for random links, one icon for random polls, and so on. If I had a coherent set of icons, like fba's lovely Iain Banks set, I could even see this approach working...

Have to say that I do love fba's Banks icons. And they don't confuse me because they're all identifiably in the same highly recognisable style.

I kinda use the icons to reflect my mood. If things are angsty then I might use the 'Use of Weapons' icon, the 'Inversions' icon is quite calm (as is the current default from 'Consider Phlebas') etc..... I used to do a similar thing with the Warcraft III icons - they indicated my increasing stress levels - Nightelf, Human, Orc, Undead!
