When I moved into the flat, I knew I wasn't going to have much disposable income left, so I knew there were going to be things I wanted to buy but wouldn't be able to. Up until now, it hasn't really been too much of a problem, and I've been quite pleased with myself.

It's getting harder. At the moment, there aren't many films I want to see but Finding Nemo, Kill Bill, Matrix Revolutions and Return of the King are all looming on the horizon. New albums I want to buy but can't: Lost Sides by Doves; Singles by the Chemical Brothers; Dear Catastrophe Waitress by Belle and Sebastian; Everything's Opened Up by the Rock of Travolta; the best of REM; the best of Beth Orton; the new Travis album; the new Strokes album, and god knows when I'm actually going to be able to go to a gig again. DVDs new or coming out soon: Coupling season three; Teachers seasons one and two; Babylon 5 season three; The Two Towers extended edition; The West Wing season two; 24 season two. New books I want to buy but shouldn't: Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson; Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman; Science Not Art edited by John Turney; Predator's Gold by Philip Reeve. The new book I'm going to buy regardless: Coalescent by Stephen Baxter.

This morning I walked into Virgin, and they have the first season of DS9 in the sale. UKP35.99.

I realise I don't need any of these things, so this risks being (risks? Hell, it is) a deeply self-indulgent whine, but even so: I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that either god hates me personally, or he just hates my bank account. Either way, faced with the current onslaught of Stuff I Want, my strategy of writing something down when I want to buy it instead of actually buying it is feeling less and less effective.
