Finally!
Dear Mr Harrison,

Re: Comet Accident and Breakdown Cover

The appointed Repairers have recently advised us that your appliance covered by the Comet Accident and Breakdown Cover is uneconomical to repair. However, under the terms and conditions of your extended warranty we are pleased to be able to offer you a like for like replacement.

So, this evening I shall be choosing a new MiniDisc player. Any suggestions as to which I should get?

Also in the post this morning was a much-anticipated copy of Fuzzy Dice courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] davehiggins, [livejournal.com profile] domh, Dave and Angharad. Looking forward to getting stuck into that later this evening. Probably soundtracked by the CDs that have arrived from [livejournal.com profile] msbachelorette...

Ooer....Hmm....what MD player, eh? I like my MZ R909 (sony), with the caveat that it's a little on the quiet side for playback over headphones. For most discs I have it turned up to max volume for a pleasent listening level.

D'ya want to be looking at Sharp or Sony models? I think sharp's also got a NetMD capable machine, which might be of use to you since you (from what I gather) use LP2 in preference to SP, and aren't huge on the recording live stuff thing. Ripping CDs and dumping to MD via USB lead is gonna be faster than realtime recording, I'd say. Sharp's MT899 is a tasty little unit, small, light, classy. With NetMD. There's a similar model, identical 'cept for the NetMD thing. I don't know if Sony's got much without NetMD these days. MZ N910 looks rather swish, and should have better battery life (but probably lower headphone output) than the sharp.

Comet Accident

Am I the only one who (briefly) thought this was some kind of insurance plan that covered specific astronomical catastrophes?

well my sister and a friend of mine both have/had sony minidisc players where the lens has stopped working properly (or altogether).

My sister's is only about 2-3 years old (she got it for christmas one year) and it only occasionally plays discs, and sometimes when playing a disc it stops and displays 'no disc'.

my friend's was about 5 or 6 years old when it stopped working altogether, displaying 'no disc' when a disc was inserted. he took really good care of it, and while 5 years or so seems like a long time for it to last I personally expect things like that to work for a lot longer.

Maybe I've just got lower expectations. When I've got an MD player, I use it *constantly* - when driving, walking around, all the time. So if it burns out after three years' intensive use, I'm not inclined to complain too much. Particularly if they're offering me a free replacement. :)

MZ N910

Well, that's the one I've ended up with. Comet don't stop Sharps anymore, and will only either exchange or give you Comet vouchers. So it had to be the Sony.

(Not great service, mind...)

Only problem with mine is that the rechargable battery died.

I only really use it for doing car compilations now anyway (and will continue to do so as Renault have *finally* agreed to put my stereo in the new car) - as I have the iPod for mobile music goodness.

Speaking of borked audio equipment - must get my hifi tape recorded fixed.....
