Ah, journalism. In today's Guardian:
Feminism: Outmoded and Unpopular.
[...]
Those questioned felt women were more equal than ever before and believed that issues such as women's greater domestic role or concentration in lower-paid jobs are the result of individual choice and natural differences between the sexes which had to be addressed by individuals rather than, as the women's movement argued, society as a whole.

What they don't mention until half-way down the page:
The findings, which are based on a sample of 35 selected individuals...

Selected from where, that's what I want to know.

Good grief. Either of us could do better than that by polling our friends lists. And this is worth space in a national daily newspaper?

become as outmoded as the suffragettes

The Suffragettes outmoded? These are the women that *died* to get women the right to vote......

What an appauling way of 'commemorating' the anniversary of women getting the vote......

True equality is unlikely to become a reality - but that doesn't mean it is irrelevent and we should stop striving for it.

And? To say they are outmoded is not to put them down - indeed it's the fact that they achieved what they set out to do that makes them outmoded.

Of course not. The question though is how we should strive for it.

Though I suppose revelations like, "every week, two women are killed by their current or ex-partner" are old, old news.

No, far more exciting to quote people out of context, make unsupported statements and re-hash your own prejudices.

I notice that Lucy whatever is not one of the journos who publishes her email address at the end of the article. Unlike Tasha Walter.

More equal?

Sure. It's just that some are more equal than others... [/pred]

Thanks for that. The variability in quality of the Guardian's reporting never ceases to amaze me!
