I'm going round to visit my flat this evening, to see if I want to buy any of the white goods and/or the futon that they don't need. What's the going rate for a second-hand futon, anyway?
New, they cost about £100-250, depending on size/quality and the aforementioned base. The standard second-hand rule for anything is to half the price then take it down a conventient quantity (say, £5-10) for every problem you have with its quality.
Therefore, you should end up paying something between £20 (for a single futon which you don't especially want) and £100 (for a nice clean double futon with a good base that will save you the bother of having to buy a bed for years to come) depending on negotiations and quality.
This one is about six feet by three feet. It's pretty big, although I wouldn't like to sleep on it unless I had to. The mattress isn't the best in the world, but I couldn't pinch through it.

Not that it would be any use to you as a bed - as I don't think you can get 7' long ones!
if it's a king-size one our tallest might be able to sleep on it diagonally
