Hopefully they'll do a Dune miniseries job of it, rather than a Children of Dune miniseries job of it...

Actually, they'll probably end up using the same studios in the Czech Republic - egads I hope they change the costumes! ;-)

See, this is what I'm sort of fearing.

The one thing I truly despised about the Dune Miniseries was the look of the thing. Pretentious use of color filters, and oh so *terrible* looking backdrops. Just...horrible. So obviously painted canvas that it didn't bear watching much of.

Red Mars needs that sense of wonder at the planet, so the visuals there need to just *work*. Red lit soundstages with sand carted in and canvas backdrops just Will Not Do.

Also? Cheap nasty CGI? No thanks. I know what can be done for TV, and if you can't do good CGI, do some proper model filming with light CGI. Still looks better.

I'm hopeful in terms of script, anyway (I'm a big 'Dune' fan, and on a story level, it worked) but I'm a bit unsure with regards to the visuals. I mean, it doesn't require the wackiness Dune needed, but still.

One word 'expense.'

Sci-Fi puts on productions, sure, but as cheap as they can get away with ... and they can get away with Barandov Studios (which are excellent) or some backlot in Vancouver.

You simply cannot expect film-quality or studio-serial-quality production for a one-off *mini-series.* Even with all the talent and infrastructure lying about (a la 'Shogun').

Anyway, given the strength of the Dune script, I found the quality of the miniseries quite acceptable - even preferable to the movie, oddly enough (and yes, I'm definitely in the minority on that one).

Yes, true..

The thing is, they tried to do too much. More than was, perhaps, strictly necessary. I'd rather have fewer big dramatic shots that are done poorly, and rely more heavily on the strength of the story. Particularly for 'Red Mars'. On 'Dune' I just really didn't like the production design. And there's gotta be a way to make people believe you're out in a desert somewhere beyond piling sand into a warehouse..

Frankly, given early-90s CGI, I really don't think their effort was that bad (for Dune), in fact I quite like that they used a 'pile of sand in a warehouse' as you said.

It's all a question of suspension of disbelief, and mine isn't so FX-dependent. I felt what they did for Dune-miniseries was entirely adequate for capturing a theatrical '4th wall' (or was it 3rd?) - and that sufficed for my disbelief needs. I didn't need an all-encompassing effort like the 'Final Fantasy' film, which I consider superb CGI...and was quickly absorbed into.

Well, actually, the CGI sec was fine, in a bizarre way, but the sand in a warehouse just annoyed me continually. Outside of the Seitch, when they're walking around non-CGI stylee (ie, worms, grand epic shots), it never felt like they were in grave danger out in the open desert. It always felt and looked like they were in a warehouse, play acting on sand. I suspect even CGI backdrops, rather than lit canvas, would've worked better. A sky with some dunes shouldn't be a) that hard or b) that expensive. It would be fine if this were theatre, but I expect something rather more immersive from a miniseries.

It was the juxtaposition that bugged me, mostly; overall, it was pretty much a success in my book, a worthy telling of the Dune story, and a lot of it worked really, really well. Some of the Lynch film stuff worked a great deal better (the, er, lighting, particularly. I *really* didn't 'dig' the lighting on the miniseries)
