I've just finished Veniss Underground and unfortunately I found part three, Shadrach's part, much more compelling then the first two parts.
I think that's probably fair--it's the longest, for starters, so it's better developed. Plus, I think the first section is almost a deliberate attempt to put off as many people as possible. ;-)
My edition is the trade paperback, so it doesn't have 'Balzac's War' in it. It's also in Secret Life, but I've currently lent my copy of that to immortalradical.
Pattern Recognition I liked a lot. I thought it made a very good companion piece to Tobias Hill's The Cryptographer which in turn made a good companion piece to Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis.
Ha. Whereas I saw a relationship with Transmission. :) I'd like to read both Cosmopolis and The Cryptographer at some point; I'm fairly certain I even have a copy of the former knocking about somewhere.
